Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson has been elected National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), securing 783 votes against Hajia Safia Mohammed’s 429.
The election took place on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where the NPP elected its new national executives.
Hawa Koomson, a former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, now takes charge of the party’s women’s wing.
How the NPP Women’s Organiser election was conducted
The National Women’s Organiser election formed part of the NPP’s wider national executive elections, supervised by the Electoral Commission.
A total of 7,163 delegates were registered for the National Delegates Conference, with voting organised across 31 polling stations at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The elections covered nine national executive positions, with 46 candidates on the final ballot.
For the Women’s Organiser position, the contest was between Hawa Koomson and Hajia Safia Mohammed.
A total of 1,275 female delegates were eligible to vote in the Women’s Organiser election.
Hawa Koomson received 783 votes, while Safia Mohammed secured 429.
Who is Hawa Koomson?
Hawa Koomson entered Parliament in 2012 as the NPP’s MP for Awutu Senya East and retained the seat in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
She served in the Akufo-Addo administration, first as Minister for Special Development Initiatives and later as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.
Hawa Koomson lost the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the NDC’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the 2024 general election after three terms in Parliament.
Her election as National Women’s Organiser returns her to a national leadership position within the NPP.
Hawa Koomson says she will work with Safia Mohammed
Speaking after the election, Hawa Koomson said she would bring Safia Mohammed into the work of the party’s women’s wing.
“It was never a tough contest. No, I didn’t see it as a tough contest. But what I’m saying is that I’ll bring her on board since we are all MPP members. We are all going to work for the party. Party and nothing else,” she said.
Hawa Koomson stands by her pepper spray proposal
Hawa Koomson also maintained her position on her campaign proposal to provide pepper spray to women in the party.
Speaking after her election, Hawa Koomson said she was not withdrawing the proposal.
“I’m not retracting it. I’m not sure it’s a crime to give someone a pepper spray to defend himself. I’m a living testimony. When I was beaten at Ablekuma North, it was the pepper spray that saved my life,” she said.
“I have no regret, and I’m not retracting it. They can talk otherwise. That’s my thinking.”
Hawa Koomson joins the NPP’s new national executive team
Hawa Koomson’s election was part of a wider change in the NPP’s national executive leadership.
John Boadu was elected National Chairman, while Justin Kodua Frimpong retained the General Secretary position. Daniel Titus Glover won the National Organiser race, and Abanga Fuseini Yakubu became National Youth Organiser.
The conference was held under the theme “One Party, One Purpose, United for Victory.”
Delegates also approved 14 amendments to the party’s constitution before voting for the new national executives.
The new executives will lead the party’s national structures as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.
For Hawa Koomson, the election marks a return to a national leadership role within the party, this time as its National Women’s Organiser.
