Accra, Ghana, October 23, 2026: The Ghana Education Service (GES) says continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) are expected to return to school next week following a temporary closure that began in August.

In a press release issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Service said preparations were far advanced for the resumption of academic work.

The statement, signed by GES Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, did not specify the date on which continuing students would return.

“Management assures that preparations are far advanced for continuing students to return to school sometime next week,” the statement said, according to [MyJoyOnline](https://www.myjoyonline.com/obuasi-shts-to-reopen-to-continuing-students-next-week-ges/).

Why was Obuasi SHTS closed?

The school was temporarily closed to continuing students on August 5, 2026, following disturbances on campus.

The unrest occurred amid tensions surrounding allegations of sexual abuse involving the school's headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai. Reports of the disturbances also referred to the destruction of school property.

The GES said first-year students reported to the school on September 18 and were already attending classes at the time of its latest announcement.

The planned return of continuing students would allow them to resume academic work after more than two months away from school.

Sexual abuse allegations remain under investigation

The planned reopening comes as investigations continue into allegations of sexual abuse involving Mr Abdulai and female students.

The headmaster has been interdicted by the GES. The police have forwarded the case docket concerning one complaint to the Office of the Attorney-General for study and advice.

The allegations have received national attention following a JoyNews investigation by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which reported claims involving as many as 19 female students.

The allegations have not been established in court.

The Minority in Parliament has separately called for an independent parliamentary inquiry into how earlier complaints were handled, including whether political interference occurred.

GES yet to announce a specific return date

Although the Service says preparations are far advanced, its October 22 announcement does not provide a confirmed date for the return of continuing students.

The GES said further updates would be communicated when necessary.

The reopening announcement addresses the resumption of academic work. Any arrangements relating to student welfare, safeguarding and the handling of complaints will remain important as the school returns to normal operations.
