Accra, Ghana, October 20, 2026: The trial of Godwin Adigbli, a 45-year-old French teacher at Labone Senior High School facing a charge of indecent assault, has been adjourned to November 16 for the continuation of cross-examination.
At the latest hearing, the defence challenged the prosecution’s handling of an item of underwear belonging to the complainant, which was presented as evidence. The defence asked the court to order forensic examination of the item and a medical examination, arguing that the results could help establish the relevance of the evidence.
The prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the defence had not challenged the exhibit when it was first presented in court. The prosecutor also said the Police Crime Laboratory could examine the stain but lacked the materials required to conduct DNA testing.
The defence maintained that its applications were intended to assist the court in determining the facts of the case and not to delay proceedings.
The court upheld its earlier decision to refuse the applications, with the presiding judge indicating that the defence could appeal if dissatisfied with the ruling. The judge also warned that the accused’s bail could be rescinded if he failed to open his defence.
Adigbli subsequently entered the witness box and adopted his witness statement as his evidence-in-chief. During cross-examination, he confirmed that he had taught French at Labone Senior High School for six years but said the complainant was not his French student.
The court also heard an exchange over the teacher’s knowledge of the hostel where the complainant lived. Adigbli said he was not a residential teacher and did not know the name of the hostel.
The case is scheduled to resume on November 16, when cross-examination is expected to continue.
The proceedings remain ongoing, and the charge against the accused has not been determined by the court.
