Fathers get one-eighth of mothers’ paid parental leave. Ghana gives fathers no statutory paternity leave

A new UN Women and World Bank Group policy brief warns that unequal parental leave reinforces the unequal distribution of unpaid care. In Ghana, where the Labour Act guarantees working mothers at least 12 weeks of paid maternity leave but makes no provision for statutory paternity leave, the debate has direct implications for women’s careers, family incomes and men’s role in caregiving.
